Gnome Shell 3.5.5 just released. The changelog does not inspire a compulsion to change. Here's a photo of my desktop anyhow.

How Social Is Your Language ?

If Git Hub stands for "Social Coding", then the Top Languages chart must say something about how social your language is. Funny to see who's at the bottom of the list. Draw your own conclusions.

make gconfig not working on Fedora 17

If you try to compile the Linux kernel from source using make gconfig it will probably not work on Fedora 17 spewing a message similar to:  * * Unable to find the GTK+ installation. Please make sure that * the GTK+ 2.0 development package is correctly installed... * You need gtk+-2.0, glib-2.0 and libglade-2.0. *                  Although libglade2 is present by default on Fedora 17, this error comes up because gtk internally needs the headers for libglade-2.0 So, you need libglade-devel. Yum it. As root:  # yum install libglade-devel

Stanford Biodesign Colloquium

Last week, I forget which day it was, some folks at office invited two academicians / entrepreneurs from Stanford to talk about Biodesign – essentially the science and art of developing medical technology and products. An occasional sift from my lazy self, I took some notes. And so I thought I will put this out on the net, since it does not contain any hush-hush secrety stuff. Needless to say, if there is something inaccurate in the notes below, it is most likely the manifestation of my ignorance and consequential misinterpretation.

My new laptop

A week ago I bought an HP G6-2005AX Notebook. Basic specs: AMD A8-4500M  Vision Quadcore CPU with Radeon HD Graphics Dedicated GPU 2MB ATI Radeon 6840 64 bit OS (Windows Home Basic, Linux) 8 GB RAM 500 GB harddisk (Toshiba ATA) I bought this from an HP dealer near Indiranagar and I paid INR 34,000 all inclusive. While I started running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin  , I quickly migrated to Fedora Core 17. Everything worked out of the box (on both distro), but I like Fedora better, because it gives me more control over the machine. I am having some difficulties in getting the AMD Catalyst 12.6 driver running for the dedicated GPU. The system is workable, just that I am not able to squeeze the best 3D from the card that I paid for. Which is good; were it not for the card, I would have been playing quake instead of tinkering with the kernel. Problems build character. Here is my first bug report/note on Fedora with the 3.6.0 kernel not ready fr my computer (actually
